Kenyan TransporTech startup, BuuPass has partnered with Safaricom, Kenya’s largest Telecommunication Company to launch a service that will allow travellers in the country to book and purchase bus tickets online.
The service which is available online (buupass.com) and through USSD (*877# ) will allow customers to book from a choice of five bus operators including Easy Coach, Modern Coast, Greenline, Palmers and East African Shuttles and make their payments through mobile money service, M-Pesa. Customers can also choose their preferred travel date, time and seat number.
“This partnership with BuuPass seeks to extend the convenience of M-PESA by empowering our customers to book a bus ticket wherever they may be and at their luxury. We further see a prospect in linking bus companies to opportunities by providing them with a solution to manage customer ticketing and cashless payments,” said Rita Okuthe, Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Safaricom.
The partnership between the two companies has been active for the past one year and more than 80,000 tickets have already been sold. Some of the most popular destinations for customers using their services include Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Migori and Bondo.
“We are glad to partner with Safaricom to provide travellers with an easy and flexible solution to book and manage their journey. Our platform similarly provides bus companies with a bus and parcel management system where they can manage their fleet, have control over their operational costs, and effectively reach more travellers and in turn sell more seats through our marketplace,” said Sonia Kabra, Co-founder and Director – BuuPass.
BuuPass which was formerly known as Magic Bus Ticketing was founded by Wyclife Omondi, Iman Cooper, and Sonia Kabra and it is Kenya’s first online marketplace for bus, air and train bookings providing a faster and easier way to book.
In 2016, the startup secured US$1 million from the Hult Prize, a startup accelerator for budding young social entrepreneurs.
